Aurora Snow is a Daily Beast writer who used to worked in the adult film industry as a performer, model and director for over 10 years. During this time Aurora was named “Female Performer of the Year” at the 2003 AVN Awards and she has since been inducted into the “Hall Of Fame” at the AVN and XRCO Awards. Now a freelance journalist, producer and actress, Aurora is widely regarded as one of the adult entertainment industry’s most popular crossover stars.
Hailing from Santa Maria, California, Aurora was an honor roll student who had started performing in community and regional theatre productions when she was 12 years old. Aurora graduated from high school when she was 17 whereupon she enrolled at UC Irvine; majoring in theatre but ultimately switching to business. Wondering how Aurora first discovered the adult industry? It all began when she was 18 years old and responded to a modelling ad in a newspaper. As Aurora herself explained within her Daily Beast article;
“I was 18 years old—“barely legal,” in industry jargon—and halfway through my first year of college at UC Irvine, worried about the debt I was incurring. In search of a high-paying job that required very little of my time, I found a newspaper ad that read “Girls make 2,000/day.” In much smaller print under that it read “nude modeling,” and then listed a phone number. That was how I ended up in the offices of Jim South, who had also notoriously recruited the underage Traci Lords…
My career in porn started out with a few photo shoots, but since my goal was to make as much money as possible in one year and then get out, run, and never look back, I decided to start doing video the very next week”.

Aurora Snow : Adult Film Career
Aurora first began working in the adult film industry in May 2000 and one of her earliest porn performances was featured in the Ed Powers sequel release More Dirty Debutantes 152. Talking about shooting her adult film industry debut in her August 2010 Daily Beast article, Aurora revealed how;
“Hours before I was to do my first video shoot, I received a call from Ed Powers, a well-known producer of amateur girls performing for their first awkward time on camera. He offered me an outrageous sum of money if only he could have my first scene. I drove over to his house right away and shot my first porn scene of many—and directly after that, drove to my second “first” scene with the director who’d originally scheduled me. Two scenes in one day was my introduction to the world of porn, and for the next few years, it was the type of routine that I would come to see as perfectly normal…
Those first couple of years, I was in demand—a new face, fresh, hot, and most importantly, young. Because, as I quickly learned, when you work in the porn industry, “barely legal” is synonymous with “VIP.” Directors lavished attention upon me. Producers clamored to get me into their films. I was put in movies with titles like Naughty Little Nymphos and Trained Teens. I quickly adjusted to playing the part of nymph. They dressed me in school-girl uniforms and tied my blonde hair into pigtails—anything to make me look every bit as young as I was. A thespian at heart, I enjoyed the performances more than I expected, and soon shed the promise I made to myself to leave the industry within a year. I had been a shy, conservative girl with more book smarts than street smarts. But in porn, I was a star. I discovered the free spirit within, embraced the experience, and marked the beginning of a very unexpected career”.
Between 2003 and 2005 Aurora was a contract performer for Sin City. Collaborating with this prominent production company enabled Aurora to make her directorial debut with the Sin City production Assploitations (2003). Aurora directed several films for Sin City/Mayhem including Assploitations 1-5 (2003-2005), Anal Delinquents 1-3 (2004-2005), Perverted Tales (2004), Sweet Obscenities (2004), Twist of Anal (2005), Teen Chocoholics (2005) and Back 2 Black (2005).

A turning point in Aurora’s adult film career came in 2003 when she was named “Female Performer of the Year” at the AVN Awards. Winning this coveted industry accolade paved the way for Aurora to host the Playboy TV series Private Calls and resulted in her making multiple appearances on The Howard Stern Show. Talking about this period of her life via her August 2010 Daily Beast article, Aurora highlighted how;
“After 250 movies, I was honored as Female Performer of the Year at the AVNs, the Oscars of the porn world. I was shocked and wasn’t sure what it meant to me. It was an unexpected honor, and yet it was hard to see myself as a star who shone brightly enough to be graced with it…
Where do you go after winning the top award in your business? For starters, Playboy TV. I signed on to host my own show, Private Calls. I also made my directorial debut, and soon went on to write and direct over a dozen titles. Thanks to a blind man convincing Howard Stern I was his favorite adult actress due to the unique sounds I made, I was invited onto the shock-jock’s wildly popular radio show. That was the beginning of my popularity on Stern, particularly with the daily sound clips and clever innuendos crafted around what he dubbed the “duck noise.” Such a sense of humor!”.

- 2017: AVN Awards winner “Hall Of Fame Inductee”
In January 2017 Aurora attended the AVN Expo when it was announced that she was being inducted into the “Hall Of Fame” at the AVN Awards. How did Aurora feel immersing herself within the adult film industry circuit once again? Well, as Aurora explained in her February 2017 Daily Beast article;
“It was strange to have fans approach me for autographs while covering the event as a journalist. One fan said he’d been toting his photo for years in the hopes of obtaining an autograph. A sense of nostalgia washed over me when the first collector plopped a hefty stack of explicit 8x10s on the table in front of me. Before I’d given it a thought, I’d already pushed my lunch aside and began signing vigorously. Old habits die hard. I caught myself and laughed out loud, thanking the guy for being a fan. That kind of admiration never gets old…
I’ve never been one of those girls that sat in a chair and charged people to take my photo. Somehow it felt wrong. When people approached I jumped up to greet them with a smile, no matter how many hundreds of times I’d done it before. Some fans saved all year to attend, plus I loved the attention. Porn was more lucrative back then; the women didn’t have to worry about pushing merchandise because the companies they were signing for paid by the hour. Many of those same companies paid a small fortune to erect elaborate customized booths, which few can afford to do now. The atmosphere had changed over the years, and I began to understand why so many stars charged for photos now…
Coming back to receive the Hall of Fame award was a different experience altogether. This time there was no walk down the red carpet, nor did I attend the awards show. With a limited amount of time to shuffle the hundreds of necessary bodies through to the awards, passes to walk down the red carpet are numbered. Several hours before the event, I was told too many red carpet passes had already been doled out. Apparently being inducted into the Hall of Fame wasn’t going to make an extra one appear. A prestigious award in its own right, AVN’s HoF is considered a special achievement. To be considered for it one must be in the industry for a minimum of ten years, made a difference in the industry, and maintained a sense of integrity. I didn’t feel particularly special that night. And I was forced to collect my lifetime achievement award at the AVN offices on my way to the airport as I headed back home…
Since then I’ve been showered with apologies about the oversight, and everyone I’ve spoken to at AVN seemed surprised to hear what happened. I find it funny. That’s the business for ya. Honored as I am to have the recognition, this is one award that won’t be displayed in my office or home. As I clean out my storage unit next week in L.A., tidying up the last remnants of my move to the heartland, I’ll gather together all my porn awards and wonder: where do these things go? “.

Aurora Snow : Official Retirement & Mainstream Media Projects
After over a decade of working in the adult film industry Aurora officially retired from performing in porn and moved from Los Angeles, California, to Macon, Missouri. During this time Aurora started working as a writer for The Daily Beast and she continues to publish a series of articles on the adult entertainment industry, sexual health, politics and women’s rights. Aurora has also written for Fortune – we recommend checking out her February 2016 article This Is What It’s Really Like To Work In Porn.
As a freelance journalist Aurora has often reflected upon her adult film career; utilising her articles to raise awareness towards the difficulties that performers face during and after their porn careers have ended. For instance, Aurora advocated within her March 2013 Daily Beast article “Blood, Sweat and Sex: My Hard Life In Porn” how;
“Adult performers might have one of the most divisive jobs in America. Being in the adult business carries a stigma that will follow a person for the rest of their life, and it can affect your ability to pursue another career in the future…
Yet the job is not without its redeeming qualities and unique experiences. There is no judgment within porn—it can be an outlet for sexual fantasies, helping those with a fetish feel accepted and less outcast. The movies we make can get a soldier through a long deployment, help a married couple spice up their love life, or provide an unconventional tutorial about sex. The good pay for relatively infrequent hours worked, not to mention the fame and the loyal fan following, create opportunities to have a voice in our community. Sex doesn’t just sell porn, it sells movies, advertisements and most of what we buy, and the adult industry fills a need within our culture. Whether or not you indulge in this form of entertainment, take a moment to consider the hard work (words not often associated with porn) that went into to creating it. It’s not the easy payday so many assume it is”.
Alongside her thought-provoking Daily Beast articles, Aurora has appeared on the YouTube political channel The Young Turks in March 2013 in order to discuss the issue of racism in porn with regards to certain Caucasian actresses refusing to shoot interracial scenes. Aurora has since visited Harvard Law School in March 2014 where she gave a talk titled Sex, Drugs and Rolling Dice: The Regulation of Vice and she has also visited the University of South Carolina School of Law in order to give a talk on Vice, Porn and American Culture. Talking about her public speaking engagements in her Daily Dot interview, Aurora mentioned that;
“My subject is “Sex, Drugs, and Rolling Dice: On The Regulation of Vice.” I’m there as a guest speaker, basically to humanize the subject of pornography and talk about how the testing is implemented, and what working conditions are like. The students are learning about laws that regulate the adult entertainment industry, and I’m there to put a face on it and talk about how they affect performers personally”.

You may also be interested to learn that Aurora has made several appearances within mainstream TV programmes and feature films. Among some of Aurora’s most notable acting credits include a cameo in Judd Apatow’s comedy movie Superbad (2010) starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cena and Emma Stone, an unaccredited role in the rom-com The Rules Of Attraction (2002) featuring James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel and Kate Bosworth, the role of ‘Mistress’ in the horror/thriller film Lizzie (2012) and an appearance in the ‘Death On Arrival’ episode of the TV series 1000 Ways to Die (2009) wherein Aurora discussed the perils of edible underwear in a segment titled ‘Way To Die #444’.
Aurora is one of a select few performers who has established a thriving career since retiring from the adult film industry. A multi-talented actress, freelance journalist and producer, Aurora looks back on her adult film career with fondness whilst forging ahead with her future projects. As Aurora aptly puts it;
“I have packed a lot of life into the last 12 years. While some people would look down on it, I don’t spend my days regretting. I treasure my fans and appreciate all this unconventional life has taught me. I’ve come to realize people don’t understand this former profession of mine, and I enjoy illuminating their curiosity. I’ve also found work in mainstream TV production, as well as in the health-and-wellness industry. Once I hit the eject button and became far enough removed from the porno machine, I found that brand-new opportunities eventually presented themselves”.
